Overview
Receipt Pocket is an app that helps users manage receipts by sending them directly to their phones via QR codes or barcodes.
This case study was accomplished in the Google UX design certificate program, followed by a fixed course plan and a digital implementation was planned. This course helped me to deepen my knowledge of user experience design and to explore approaches to a wide range of user-targeted implementations.
Problem
Most receipt management apps rely on paper receipts, which are inconvenient, inefficient, and time-consuming. They also frustrate customers and have a negative environmental impact.
In the United States alone, paper receipt production uses an estimated12.4 million trees,13.2 billion gallons of water, and emits 4 billion pounds of CO2 each year.
over 90% of paper receipts are coated with BPA or BPS – known disruptors of the endocrine system.
Skipping receipts would save 12 billion pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2), the equivalent of one million cars on the road.
Challenge
Competitive Analysis
In competitive analysis, we will evaluate the current digital receipt applications available and evaluate what they are doing well and where improvements can be made.
There are a number of apps that offer users the ability to save receipts onto their app. These apps currently offer:
Using a camera to scan a paper receipt
Manually entering the receipt into the app
Motivating users with rewards
Report features
After conducting a competitive analysis, I found that competitors in the market must include paper receipts in their process to save receipts to their apps.
Solution
The design goal for Compass was to create a simple, consistent, and intuitive experience that enhances user efficiency. A key focus was consolidating complex workflows into a streamlined interface, ensuring users could navigate seamlessly without unnecessary friction.
01 Quick and Simple
This project aims to create a new way to save receipts onto apps directly without receiving printed receipts. In order to achieve this, I developed an app that allows users to receive their receipts by scanning a barcode or QR code to save directly on the app.
02 Categorization
An important part of managing expenses is categorizing receipts. The user can create categories based on their expense pattern, as well as on how they pay for their expenditures, in order to better understand their spending habits.
Receipt Pocket enhances expense management with its share feature. Share it with loved ones such as partners, family members or financial advisors.
04 Report
Report features help users to review their expenses in detail and compare with their previous history. In order to make the information more understandable, I used easy to comprehend data visualizations to help users to acknowledge their expenses.
Meet the users
John & Mary
John and Mary plan to get married later this year, so they need to save money. It's a big decision for them both. Saving up for their wedding is a priority for them. Currently, Mary and John live together. The couple has a joint account for living expenses.
Stella
Stella graduated from a university recently. Stella's parents helped her financially throughout her degree program. Still, she has some student loans to pay off. She will need to manage her budget tightly until she gets a full-time job. Also, she just started making money on her own, so she needs to be careful with her spending.

Usability Test
Task 1: Ask users to find a way to add a new receipt on the Homepage.
Task 2: Ask users to select barcode scan to add a new receipt.
Task 3: Ask users to select the Grocery category.
Task 4: Ask users to choose "John" to share the receipt with.
Task 5: Ask users to look through summary page.
Insight
01
Fragmented workflow
The "Goal" feature on the homepage is considered unnecessary by some users. In my initial design, I created a goal feature that motivates people to manage their expenses by setting goals. However, the majority of participants did not find it useful.
02
Users want to adjust details of the receipt during the "adding a new receipt" process.
It has been noted that some users are concerned when they need to adjust details in specific circumstances.
03
Limited accessibility
Users need instruction that explains different ways to save receipts in digital format. There were some participants who were not familiar with the concept of receiving their receipt by QR code or barcode directly to their phone.
04
Labels in the navigation bar need to be more intuitive.
The initial labeling of the navigation bar caused confusion for some users.
05
Many users had time finding share icon when they are asked complete Task 5.
The share functionality should be placed in a more prominent location. The users would also like to be able to add a new contact to share receipts with.
